The answer really depends on what type of tail light bulb you decide to go with. Halogen tail light bulbs will cost about $3-5 each to replace, LED tail light bulbs will cost about $10-15 each to replace. You may want to replace both brake light bulbs if you are replacing one if one bulb just went out the other one may on its way out too.
After some research I found out that the halogen housings distort how the led light is directed. It's more of a random scatter than a direct beam. Looks good though, hopefully it all works out. Depends on the style led light you got, they design some led lights to mimic the reflection of a halogen bulb.
It's not legal and also not advisable. LED bulbs in a halogen headlight can't focus the light beam properly so you actually wind up with less light on the road where you need it and more light as glare into oncoming traffic.
