In your Settings menu, go to Settings > Display, then scroll down and turn on Subtitles and Subtitle Speaker Name. This adds the name of the person speaking to the subtitles.

It depends on the game for me. I definitely prefer subtitles in games like the Metal Gear series in which you have to keep track of lots of names and information in order to follow the story. In games with simpler narratives (The Last of Us for example) I prefer not having the words popping up on the screen. 2.
