I agree. Putting in multiplayer just for the sake of having friends around is not good game design. Playing multiplayer games can be a fun experience, but just slapping in co-op or the option for more players does not maketh a good game. I'm probably going to get burned on the stake here, but an example of this is the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer.
